Robot-assisted telepresence is primarily found in the fields of artificial intelligence, industry and Industry 4.0, and robots in the home. The term describes a technology that allows people to be present in another location remotely via a robot. These robots are often equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers. This enables users to see, hear, and speak in real-time as if they were directly on-site.
A vivid example: a manager is in Berlin and wants to visit a factory in Munich without travelling. She controls a telepresence robot via a laptop or tablet and can move through the factory, speak with employees, and get a sense of it as if she were really there.
Robot-assisted telepresence saves travel costs and time, protects the environment, and enables flexible collaboration – including internationally. It is used not only in companies but also in hospitals, schools, and museums. This technology makes new forms of working and communicating over long distances possible, thus becoming an important building block of digital transformation.
