Leadership development today encompasses more than just traditional further training. Companies are increasingly reporting that they need to rethink their programmes to meet current challenges. Leadership development is thus gaining a central role in shaping sustainable and effective leadership cultures. This article explains practical approaches and examples of how leadership development can be re-imagined and how transruption coaching provides impetus in this regard.

Leadership Development: Modern Methods and Their Practical Implementation

The transformation of leadership development from purely training to integrated, implementation-oriented concepts is noticeable. The combination of different methods allows for individual and sustainable support. It often becomes apparent that the impact significantly increases when formal educational offerings such as seminars and workshops are linked with on-the-job learning, for example, mentoring and coaching.

For a manufacturing company, for example, managers go through a programme consisting of online modules covering theory, followed by in-person workshops and subsequent guided coaching on applying the content in their day-to-day work. This builds knowledge on the one hand, and confidence in practical implementation on the other, thereby strengthening self-assurance and leadership competence.

A second example from the IT industry shows how job rotation places young leaders in different departments to broaden their perspectives and foster a holistic understanding of management. In parallel, 360-degree feedback is used, providing participants with comprehensive feedback from employees, colleagues, and superiors to identify specific areas for development.

Companies are also embracing Action Learning in the service sector: small groups work on real projects, tackling problems in a solution-oriented manner while simultaneously strengthening skills. This practical learning is directly applicable and supports sustainable behavioural changes.

The meaning of the individual change journey

Leadership development is closely linked to the individual change process of the leader. Many programmes are modelled on the so-called “Change Journey”, which comprises four central phases: Mindset Change, Behavioural Change, Expanding Comfort Zone, and Excellence Leadership. These phases describe the path from conscious attitude through routine to sustainable leadership excellence.

A financial executive, navigating new challenges in hybrid teams with the support of coaching, has reported significantly improved communication and decision-making through this development process. The coaching enabled them to establish new ways of thinking and to implement these purposefully in their daily work.

Another case from a medium-sized industrial company illustrates how targeted self-reflection and practice-oriented training enabled a manager to transform from a purely technical to an integrative leadership personality. This significantly improved teamwork and increased employee satisfaction.

Even an internationally active trading company regularly reports that managers gain more confidence in dealing with complex change processes through structured development programmes. This includes both the use of digital tools and the leadership of intercultural teams.

Practical support through transruption coaching for leadership development

Transruptions-Coaching positions itself as targeted support in leadership development. It not only helps leaders acquire knowledge but, more importantly, assists them in managing concrete projects and changes. The coaching provides impulses and spaces for reflection to find individual solutions and effectively shape one's own leadership behaviour.

BEST PRACTICE at a client (name withheld due to NDA): In a large corporation, disruption coaching was used to support managers in building agile project management. The managers received assistance in questioning established thought patterns and trialling new communication channels. This led to increased motivation and better team dynamics in a previously stagnant area.

Another example comes from the pharmaceutical industry, where executives were supported in the introduction of digital processes. The accompanying coaching process allowed individual anxieties to be addressed and practical strategies for implementation to be developed, which accelerated and stabilised the change process.

Finally, transruptions coaching also supports the development of leadership tips for challenging situations such as conflict management or crisis communication. Regular reflection and practical case studies help to act more routinely and to promote an open leadership culture.

My analysis

Leadership development should be understood as a holistic and dynamic process. The combination of formal and informal learning formats, adapted to individual needs and concrete contexts, promotes sustainable change. Methods such as coaching, mentoring, and practice-integrated learning are gaining importance because they provide targeted support for application in everyday leadership.

Leadership development, guided by transruptions-coaching, not only creates competency profiles but also establishes the conditions for effective action in complex and constantly changing work environments. Companies that invest in their leaders in this way promote stable leadership structures in the long term and thus the success of their entire team.
