The term micropayments is primarily found in the areas of e-commerce and digital trade, digital transformation, and blockchain. Micropayments are very small amounts of money paid online – usually cent amounts or a few euros. They make it possible to purchase digital content or services very flexibly and without expensive subscriptions.

A typical example: You want to read just a single article on a news website, rather than having to sign up for a full monthly subscription. With micropayments, you would pay, for instance, just 30 pence for that one piece. This usually works quickly and automatically, for example by credit card or through special payment services, and sometimes with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Micropayments are becoming increasingly important due to digitalisation, as they create new business models for providers and consumers. Streaming services, online games, digital goods such as music or e-books – in many areas, small amounts are increasingly being billed individually rather than collected as a flat rate.

This makes micropayments fairer and more flexible for all users to access digital content, and supports companies in implementing innovative payment models.
