Social robots (Glossary)

(1087)

Social robots are primarily found in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Society, and Robotics. They are specially developed robots created to communicate with humans and take on social tasks. Unlike classic industrial robots, which only operate heavy machinery, social robots can speak, listen, mimic gestures, and even recognise emotions, akin to small companions.

An everyday example is the social robot „Pepper“. It is used in some shops or nursing homes to greet visitors, answer simple questions, or entertain residents. Social robots react to tone of voice, facial expressions, or movements, thereby creating human-like interaction. They can help reduce loneliness, take on simple assistance tasks, or support children's learning in educational institutions.

The use of social robots makes digital technologies directly accessible to many people. They are important examples of how advanced technology can enrich our daily lives – not through pure function, but through social interaction and support. Future trends show that social robots will play an increasingly significant role in our everyday lives.
