Obfuscation of AI models (Glossary)

(1315)

The term obfuscation of AI models belongs to the categories Artificial Intelligence, Cybercrime and Cybersecurity, and Digital Transformation.

Obfuscation of AI models describes methods by which developers disguise their artificial intelligences so that outsiders find them harder to understand or copy. The primary goal is usually to protect intellectual property or prevent misuse of the technology. The „disguise“ works similarly to a chef hiding their secret recipe: the ingredients are there, but the exact composition remains inscrutable.

A vivid example is when a company develops an exceptionally good AI algorithm that recognises images better than any competitor. To prevent others from simply replicating this success, the AI model is obfuscated – for example, by making the code difficult to read or by hiding important processes within the model. This protects the genuine added value, while at the same time making it harder for criminals to copy or misuse the code for nefarious purposes.

In the modern economy, the obfuscation of AI models is an important measure to protect innovation and strengthen cybersecurity.
