Lightweight AI Models (Glossary)

The term lightweight AI models belongs to the world of artificial intelligence and is playing an increasingly important role in the fields of automation and Industry 4.0.

Lightweight AI models are special Artificial Intelligences that have been developed to require particularly little storage space or computing power. While large AI models often need expensive and powerful computers, lightweight AI models can also run on simpler devices, for example on tablets, small industrial computers, or even sensors.

This makes them ideal for machines and plants in production where quick decisions are needed directly on site, without having to send large amounts of data to a data centre first. A clear example: A camera on the assembly line uses a lightweight AI model to immediately detect faulty products and sort them out – in real time, without needing a constant internet connection.

Lightweight AI models therefore help companies to use Artificial Intelligence flexibly and cost-effectively – right where it's needed. They are an important building block for digital transformation in many companies.
