LiDAR in robotics is primarily found in the fields of robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence. LiDAR stands for „Light Detection and Ranging“ and describes a technology that allows robots to perceive their surroundings. In this process, a LiDAR sensor emits laser beams and measures how long it takes for the light to hit an object and return. This creates precise three-dimensional maps of the environment.
In robotics, LiDAR is used to enable robots to detect obstacles, navigate, and operate autonomously. Autonomous vacuum cleaner robots, in particular, make use of this technology. As they move, they „scan“ the home, recognising furniture, walls, and even scattered objects. This allows them to always know precisely where they are and how best to manoeuvre around obstacles.
Another example is Industry 4.0: here, driverless transport systems use LiDAR to move goods safely and efficiently in large factories without colliding with people or machines.
