The term Intelligent Edge is particularly relevant in the fields of the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and Industry and Industry 4.0. It describes a technology where data is no longer sent to large data centres or the cloud first, but is processed directly where it is generated – at the so-called „edge“ of the network, for example in machines, sensors, or small on-site computers.
This means: Instead of sending large amounts of data while on the go and waiting for slow analysis, important information is analysed immediately and automatically. This saves time, relieves network strain, and increases security because sensitive data often doesn't even leave the company premises.
A good example: a machine in a factory collects vast amounts of data using sensors. Thanks to Intelligent Edge, the machine analyses this data right there on-site and can react immediately – for instance, by shutting itself down if overheating is imminent or requesting maintenance. This makes processes faster, more efficient, and often safer. Intelligent Edge thus enables companies to react quickly and specifically to what is actually happening on-site.
