The term API-first is at home in the areas of Digital Transformation, Internet of Things and eCommerce and Digital Commerce.
API First means that when developing new software, the so-called „interface“ – that is, the API (Application Programming Interface) – is planned and built first. This interface ensures that different programs or devices can communicate with each other easily and reliably.
For companies offering digital products or online services, the API-first approach offers many advantages. Instead of building software first and then retrofitting connections to other systems, API-first ensures openness and flexibility from the outset. This makes later expansion and adaptation much easier and saves time and money.
A clear example: An online shop is planning a new app. If it takes an API-first approach, the interface through which the app receives all data, such as products, prices, and customer information, is developed first. This way, in addition to an app, a website, a partner platform, or even a smart home device can be easily connected later on. This positions the company for the future and makes it flexible.
