Speech biometrics is a term from the categories of Artificial Intelligence, Cybercrime and Cybersecurity, and Digital Transformation. It refers to technology used to uniquely identify a person by their voice. Similar to a fingerprint, every person's voice is unique: pitch, speaking pace, accent, and even the smallest peculiarities in speech behaviour ensure that speech biometrics can reliably distinguish between different people.

In practice, voice biometrics are primarily used in the security sector, for example in telephone banking or customer service hotlines. As soon as a customer calls, a system analyses their voice and compares it with a stored voice sample. If it matches, the person can be unambiguously verified – passwords or PINs become redundant. This not only makes voice biometrics more secure, but also more convenient, as users no longer have to remember complicated access details.

A vivid example: You call your bank and are greeted as usual. When you speak, the system automatically recognises your voice. Within seconds, you are identified as an authorised customer and can carry out your banking transactions – completely without additional security questions. At the same time, voice biometrics protect against fraudsters who try to impersonate someone else over the phone, as they cannot perfectly imitate the voice.

Overall, speech biometrics helps make everyday processes safer and easier, for both companies and customers. The technology is constantly evolving and will be used in even more areas in the future.
