Semantic Search Engines (Glossary)

The term „semantic search engines“ is particularly relevant in the fields of Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data and Smart Data.

Semantic search engines are developments of classic search engines like Google. While traditional search engines mainly search for specific keywords, semantic search engines understand the meaning of the search query. They recognise connections between words and thus produce better, more relevant results. This means the search engine, in a way, thinks along and also understands when a question is phrased differently.

A simple example: If someone enters the search query „best restaurants for vegetarians nearby,“ a semantic search engine not only considers the keywords „restaurant“ and „vegetarian“ but also understands that vegetarian options are being sought in the immediate vicinity. It incorporates menus, reviews, and locations.

For businesses, the use of semantic search engines means enormous improvement: customers find more precisely what they are looking for, data is meaningfully linked, and user satisfaction rises. Especially with large amounts of data, this intelligent technology is an important component of digital transformation and a clever contribution to competitiveness.
