Robotics Simulators (Glossary)

Robotics simulators are primarily found in the fields of robotics, industry and Industry 4.0, and artificial intelligence. They are special software programs that allow robots and their movements to be virtually reproduced. This means that before a real robot is used in production, its behaviour can be tested and improved on the computer.

Robotics simulators can be used to simulate various scenarios. For example, an engineer can test whether a robot arm can assemble components flawlessly without anything breaking in reality. This saves time and money by identifying errors early on. Furthermore, it allows companies to try out new ideas without having to purchase expensive hardware straight away.

A clear example: In a car factory, robots are to be fitted with new headlights. Using a robotics simulator, the team first checks on the computer whether the robotic arms can reach everywhere and work together. Only when everything runs smoothly on the computer does the company replicate the deployment in real production.

Robotic simulators are becoming increasingly important for optimising processes, reducing costs, and testing innovations with low risk.
