The term „prototypical networks“ is particularly relevant in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Industry 4.0. It describes special networks that are used in the early stages of developing AI systems or industrial plants to test new ideas quickly and efficiently.

Prototypical networks often consist of simplified but functional structures intended to mimic the behaviour of a larger system. They serve to test out specific concepts before a final, more complex solution is developed. This saves time, cost, and resources.

A vivid example: in a factory looking to optimise its production processes with the help of AI, a small „prototypical network“ could initially be set up with just a few machines. This allows for testing how well the artificial intelligence can control the operations. Only when this network functions successfully will the technology be rolled out across the entire operation.

Prototypical networks therefore help companies to minimise risks and test ideas under realistic conditions before making comprehensive investments.
