Policy-oriented AI is a term from the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Industry and Industry 4.0, as well as cybercrime and cybersecurity. It describes Artificial Intelligence (AI) that works according to clearly defined rules and specifications. The aim is for the AI's decisions to be based on established policies – for example, legal requirements, ethical guidelines, or specific company rules.

Instead of just learning from large amounts of data, policy-oriented AI combines existing knowledge with fixed rules. This ensures that AI systems become more predictable and secure – especially in sensitive areas such as production, intelligent manufacturing, or the monitoring of IT systems.

For example: In a factory operating with AI-driven robots, a policy-oriented AI ensures that robots maintain specific safety distances from people and do not perform dangerous movements. Even if the AI is otherwise very flexible, it never oversteps these defined boundaries.

This is how policy-oriented AI helps companies leverage innovation while keeping important rules in sight.
