Latency-aware AI is a term used primarily in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, automation, and Industry and Factory 4.0. It describes AI systems that are optimised to react particularly quickly and without perceptible delay.
In many modern applications, speed is crucial. Imagine a factory where an AI system monitors machines and needs to react immediately if a fault occurs – for example, a robotic arm suddenly stops. In such cases, there can be no long waiting times („latency“), otherwise production could grind to a halt or faults could be missed. A latency-aware AI therefore analyses data and makes decisions as quickly as possible.
Latency-aware AI is also important in other areas, such as with autonomous vehicles. If an obstacle appears, braking or evasive manoeuvres must be initiated without delay.
In summary: Latency-aware AI helps to ensure that critical processes can be monitored and controlled in real-time. This leads to increased safety, efficiency, and a better user experience in many digital and automated work environments.
