Line-of-sight navigation is primarily found in the fields of industry and Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, and automation. The concept describes a method whereby machines, robots, or vehicles, using optical aids such as cameras or sensors, recognise specific lines or markings on the floor and automatically follow them. The objective of line-of-sight navigation is to simplify orientation for the machines, enabling them to move safely and efficiently within their working environment.
A good example of this is the use of autonomous transport robots in modern warehouses. These robots navigate using painted lines on the floor or special coloured strips. They detect these lines with cameras and independently approach shelves or transport boxes without human intervention.
Line-of-sight navigation automates workflows and increases operational safety, as robots can always find their way reliably. The technology is particularly useful where consistent and predictable paths are required, for example, when delivering components to an assembly station. The term line-of-sight navigation therefore plays a central role in the planning of automation projects.
