Latent Variables (Glossary)

The term „Latent Variables“ primarily appears in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Smart Data, and Digital Transformation. Latent variables, or „hidden variables“ in German, are characteristics or influences that we cannot measure directly, but which are nevertheless important for our analysis.

Imagine you want to know how satisfied people are with an online shop. Satisfaction itself cannot be measured directly, but it influences measurable things such as click behaviour, how long users stay on a page, and how often they make a purchase. We can collect this measurable data, but the underlying satisfaction remains „latent,“ meaning hidden.

In artificial intelligence, latent variables are used to identify relationships that are not immediately apparent. Especially with Big Data, they help to create an overall picture from many individual pieces of information that supports companies in their decision-making. Latent variables therefore make it possible to derive important insights from data, even when not all information is obvious.
