The term „Large Context Windows for LLMs“ originates from the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation, and Big Data and Smart Data. It describes an important characteristic of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT or other AI applications.
A context window specifies how much text an AI model can view and process at once to generate meaningful responses. The larger this window is, the more information from the previous conversation or text passage the AI can absorb – similar to a human reading an entire chapter and not just a paragraph. Previously, LLMs could only retain a few sentences. Today, large context windows are possible: for example, the AI can analyse and discuss entire emails, contracts, or multiple pages of text without losing track.
An example: An HR department wants to conduct a long applicant chat with an AI. Thanks to large context windows, the AI „knows“ what has already been asked throughout the entire conversation and doesn't give duplicate answers. This makes communication more intelligent and efficient.
