Computer vision in robotics (Glossary)

Computer vision in robotics is particularly at home in the fields of robotics, automation and artificial intelligence. This term describes the ability of robots to „see“ their surroundings with cameras or sensors and to understand the information collected. Similar to how the human eye recognises objects, computer vision helps a robot to identify things, avoid obstacles or carry out specific tasks.

A well-known example is a robot arm in a car factory: thanks to computer vision, it can recognise and distinguish individual parts and grip them precisely. The robot arm knows exactly which component is needed at which time and places it correctly. Without this technology, the process would have to be monitored much more closely by humans.

The advantage of computer vision in robotics is that processes become more efficient and flexible. Robots with „eyes“ can make decisions independently and adapt quickly to new situations. Computer vision therefore plays a central role on the way to intelligent and adaptive machines in industry and beyond.
