Ambient intelligence is particularly at home in the fields of automation, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence. The term describes the ability of systems to perceive, understand, and react to their environment accordingly. The goal is to make our lives and work easier and more efficient through clever technology.
This happens by sensors, cameras or other devices continuously collecting data from the environment. This information is analysed and used by intelligent programmes to automatically perform appropriate actions. For example, an environment-aware office detects how much light is in the room, how many people are present, and then automatically adjusts the lighting or temperature accordingly.
Another example: In a smart home, a heating system learns when its occupants usually come home. It then ensures the correct temperature in advance without anyone having to flick a switch. Ambient intelligence thus saves energy and increases comfort.
In short: Ambient intelligence is the smart connection of sensors and artificial intelligence, which supports us unnoticed in many areas of life and makes our environment „learnable“.
