Swarm Robotics (Glossary)

Swarm robotics belongs to the categories of robotics, artificial intelligence, and Industry 4.0. The term describes a new type of robotics where many small robots work together, similar to a swarm of bees or ants. The individual robots are often simply built, but collectively they can solve very complex tasks.

Instead of being controlled by a central computer, each robot makes small decisions independently. Through constant communication with each other, a „collective brain“ emerges. This makes swarm robotics systems particularly flexible, resilient, and able to continue working even if individual robots fail.

A typical example from industry: Many small transport robots move independently through a warehouse. Together, they organise the transport of goods without needing central coordination. This makes warehousing more efficient and saves costs.

Swarm robotics can help automate tasks that are too dangerous or monotonous for humans. Companies benefit from higher productivity and flexible solutions that can be quickly adapted to changing requirements.
