It describes the approach of developing and deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) in an environmentally friendly, resource-efficient and socially responsible manner.
This means: Sustainable AI is about minimising the environmental impact of AI as much as possible. AI applications often require a lot of energy, for example when training large language models. This is where Sustainable AI comes in, asking how to reduce electricity consumption, use green energy, or make calculations more efficient. However, social aspects are also included – such as fair data processing and inclusive algorithms for all people.
A clear example: A company uses AI to control production processes in an energy-saving way. The AI ensures that machines only run when it is absolutely necessary and optimises the entire workflow. This not only consumes less electricity but also saves costs and protects the environment. This is a practical application of Sustainable AI in the everyday lives of businesses.
