The term "spoken dialogue systems" is primarily found in the fields of artificial intelligence, automation, and digital transformation. A spoken dialogue system is software that allows people to communicate using speech – much like in a normal conversation. The best-known examples are voice assistants such as Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant.
Such systems understand what the user says and can respond or complete tasks. For example, you can tell this kind of voice dialogue system, „Set an alarm for 7 o'clock.“ The software recognises the task, processes it and confirms, „The alarm is set for 7 o'clock.“.
Speech dialogue systems simplify many processes, for example in customer service. Instead of going through a long on-hold queue on the phone, a customer can simply say what they want – the system listens, recognises the request, and offers direct help.
For companies, voice dialogue systems represent a significant opportunity to automate processes and increase customer satisfaction. These systems are constantly being further developed and are used in an ever-increasing number of areas of life – from smart household appliances to digital assistants in cars.
