The term „Smart Grid“ is primarily at home in the areas of sustainability and Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things, and digital transformation. A smart grid is an „intelligent electricity network“. It connects modern digital technologies with the classic electricity grid, allowing power generators, distributors, and consumers to communicate and collaborate more effectively.
A smart grid makes it possible to distribute and store energy more efficiently. This means that renewable energy sources like solar and wind power can be fed in and used in a targeted way – even when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. Thanks to sensors and measuring devices, the smart grid always knows exactly how much electricity is currently needed or being produced.
A simple example: In a household with a solar power system, the smart grid can detect when a lot of its own electricity is being produced. Then, the washing machine or dishwasher could start automatically to make optimal use of the electricity. At the same time, the smart grid ensures that power outages are detected and resolved more quickly.
In short: a smart grid helps us to manage energy more sustainably and efficiently, making our entire electricity system fit for the future.
