Robust sensor fusion is a term from the fields of artificial intelligence, automation, and the Internet of Things. It describes a technique where data from different sensors are combined with each other to obtain a comprehensive picture of a situation that is as accurate and reliable as possible.

Sensors on their own often have weaknesses: a camera can see little in fog, radar cannot detect colours, and a temperature sensor does not measure movement. Sensor fusion ensures that these weaknesses are compensated for. Robust in this context means that the system continues to deliver stable results even if individual sensors fail or provide inaccurate data.

A simple example: A self-driving car uses robust sensor fusion. It simultaneously processes information from cameras, radar, and lidar sensors. If camera images are blurry in fog, the car can still continue driving safely because radar and lidar still provide good data. The interplay ensures greater safety and reliability, as the system does not rely on a single sensor.

Through robust sensor fusion, devices become „smarter“ and more resilient against errors – an important step for modern, automated applications in industry, mobility, and smart homes.
