The term real-time inference is primarily found in the fields of artificial intelligence, automation, and industry and Industry 4.0. It describes the ability of computer systems to process incoming data immediately and react to it directly. In simple terms: „inference“ means that an artificial intelligence (AI) makes intelligent decisions based on existing models – immediately, without any time delay.
A vivid example: In a modern factory, cameras are used to continuously inspect products for defects. With real-time inference, the AI can immediately recognise when a production defect occurs on the video images and stop production or initiate corrective measures straight away. Without this technology, the analysis would take much longer, and faulty products could leave the factory.
Real-time inference is particularly important for companies that need to react quickly to changes – for example, in quality control, predictive maintenance of machinery, or the detection of cyberattacks. Thanks to this technology, processes can be made safer, more efficient, and more economical. It is a key component of modern, digital business models.
