Quantum algorithms fall into the categories of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation. They are special computational methods that run on quantum computers. Unlike conventional computers, quantum computers work with so-called qubits and can therefore examine multiple possibilities simultaneously. This makes quantum algorithms particularly fast for tasks that would take extremely long for today's computers.
A vivid example of this is searching in vast databases. Whereas normal computers have to go through every possibility individually, quantum algorithms can search many entries simultaneously. This allows certain problems, such as finding relevant information in large datasets or cracking complex encryption, to be solved much faster.
Quantum algorithms are currently important primarily for the future. For example, they could be used in artificial intelligence to recognise patterns in big data even better. They also play a growing role in digital transformation, for instance for faster financial transactions or more secure data encryption. Nevertheless, many applications are currently still in the testing phase, as quantum computers themselves are only just being developed.
