Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) (Glossary)

(1414)

The term Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) originates from the fields of cybercrime and cybersecurity, as well as digital transformation. A Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) is a modern security solution that protects networks and data better than conventional firewalls. While conventional firewalls primarily only monitor data traffic on specific ports and IP addresses, an NGFW can additionally detect and ward off more complex threats like viruses, hacker attacks, or so-called „phishing“.

The special thing about a next-generation firewall is that it works „intelligently“: it analyses incoming and outgoing data, for example, checking emails and files for suspicious content, and automatically blocks anomalous activities. This way, hidden malware that normal firewalls would overlook can also be detected.

A practical example: In a company, an employee tries to open an infected email. The Next-Generation Firewall immediately detects the malicious element and prevents it from causing damage. Thus, an NGFW not only protects the company network but also the sensitive data of the company – a must for any modern business.
