Hebbian learning originates from the fields of artificial intelligence, industry and Industry 4.0, and digitalisation. It describes a fundamental learning rule with which computers and machines can learn similarly to the human brain.

The principle is simple: connections between artificial „neurons“ always strengthen when two neurons are active at the same time. Imagine you hear a horn every time you see a particular light. After repeating this a few times, you „remember“ the connection between the light and the horn. Hebbian Learning works just like this in machines: if a certain stimulus (e.g., image or sound recognition) is linked to a certain outcome often enough, the connection between these data points becomes stronger.

In practice, Hebbian learning is used in industry, for example, to train machines more flexibly to recognise recurring patterns or errors. This allows a production plant to autonomously discover which processes occur together frequently and to optimise its processes accordingly.

Thus, through Hebbian learning, artificial intelligence can recognise patterns more efficiently and helps to continuously improve production processes or intelligent systems.
