Edge Computing (Glossary)

Edge computing is primarily at home in the fields of the Internet of Things, Industry and Industry 4.0, and Artificial Intelligence. It refers to a technology in which data is no longer processed exclusively in large, central data centres (clouds), but directly at the location where it is generated, such as on machines, sensors or facilities – in other words, „at the edge“ of the network.

The special thing about edge computing is that data doesn't have to travel long distances for analysis or quick decisions. This saves time and bandwidth. Imagine a fault on a machine occurs in a modern factory. Thanks to edge computing, the machine can immediately analyse the data about the problem itself and initiate a quick solution before the information even reaches the central company network. This minimises downtime and makes production more efficient.

Edge computing is becoming increasingly important, especially for companies that use many devices or sensors. It ensures that processes are optimised in real time and data is processed securely – sometimes directly where it is generated. This increases speed, security and flexibility in operation.
