The term „driving robot“ originates from the fields of automation, industry, and Industry 4.0, as well as robotics. Driving robots are special machines capable of controlling vehicles – entirely without human intervention. They are primarily used in test environments, for example, in the automotive industry, to test new cars or safety systems.
A driving robot can turn a steering wheel, accelerate, brake, and change gears, just like a human. The big advantage: it always works consistently, repeats procedures exactly, and doesn't make mistakes due to fatigue or distraction. This makes vehicle test results much more reliable and comparable.
A clear example: a car manufacturer develops a new brake assist system. To test its effectiveness, a driving robot steers the car hundreds of times towards an obstacle at identical speed and with exactly the same braking procedure. This allows for precise measurement of how quickly and safely the system functions.
Driving robots are therefore an important component in making vehicles even safer – and make automation in industry tangible.
