Inference Engine (Glossary)

The term Inference Engine is firmly established in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and Big Data and Smart Data. An Inference Engine, in German „Schlussfolgerungsmaschine“ (reasoning machine), is a central element of many AI systems. It helps to derive new information or decisions from existing data.

One can imagine an inference engine as the thinking centre of an AI: it analyses data and rules available to it and draws conclusions from them. For example, an inference engine in online retail uses customer data and product information to decide which items to suggest to a buyer next.

In Industry 4.0, inference engines also play a significant role. They can evaluate machine data and predict when maintenance is necessary before a failure occurs – this saves time and costs. The crucial factor here is that the inference engine automates and accelerates decision-making processes because it processes large amounts of data at lightning speed.

Whether in referral management, smart factories, or the analysis of large datasets – modern artificial intelligence would often be inconceivable without the inference engine.
