Algorithmic Transparency (Glossary)

4.9
(1274)

Algorithmic transparency is especially important in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Smart Data, and Digital Society. This means that how an algorithm – a digital set of instructions for making decisions – works is understandable and traceable.

Many companies use algorithms, for example for automatic credit scoring, product recommendations in online shops, or filtering applications. However, it often remains unclear which rules are used to make these decisions. Algorithmic transparency ensures that it is possible to understand what is happening in the background: Which data is being used? How do these data weight the decision? Are certain groups perhaps being unintentionally disadvantaged?

For example, imagine software that helps sort job applications. If this software is algorithmically transparent, it can be explained why certain applicants receive an interview invitation and others do not – for instance, because relevant professional experience counts more than their place of residence.

Algorithmic transparency builds trust because it makes it clear how digital decisions are made. Especially in times when artificial intelligence and big data are shaping our everyday lives, transparency is crucial – for fairness, control and the acceptance of new technologies.
