Since Russia hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup It has been announced that there are fears regarding the safety of football fans in the country. Russian fans have a negative image in Europe, which worsened after the mass brawls in Marseille during Euro 2016. English fans accused Russian hooligans of acting with „military organisation“, and they were equipped with facemasks and telescopic batons during the riots.
Given this terrible experience, it comes as no surprise that people in the UK are pessimistic about the safety of this tournament. In a recent Ipsos survey were the respondents in different countries asked if they thought the tournament in Russia will be safe for visitors or not. Just 34 percent of British respondents agreed with this, the lowest figure recorded in the survey. People in China and India (two countries Russia has not reached) are the most confident: over 80 percent agreeing that the tournament will be safe. In Germany, 67 percent of respondents believe it will be safe, as do 59 percent in France.
