The United Nations General Assembly Nations elects five non-permanent members of the Security Council on Friday. The UN Security Council has a total of 15 members: five permanent members (USA, China, Russia, France, and the UK) and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
All 5 permanent members had 73 one-year terms (for Russia, this is split between the former USSR and the present-day Russian Federation). The non-permanent member with the most years and terms is Japan, followed by the two South American countries Brazil and Argentina. Both Pakistan as well as India, who have been in a stalemate for 70 years due to the disputed Kashmir conflict, have been represented on the Security Council for 14 years and 7 two-year periods respectively.
