Smart Edge Devices (Glossary)

Smart edge devices are primarily found in the Internet of Things, automation, and Industry 4.0. They play a central role in evaluating data directly where it originates, rather than sending it to a remote cloud – for example, at a machine in a factory or a sensor in a building.

A smart edge device is, for example, a modern surveillance camera that not only records images but also analyses them directly and decides whether a movement is important enough to trigger an alarm. This saves time, reduces data volumes and enables rapid responses.

For businesses, the use of smart edge devices means greater efficiency and security. Production data can be processed immediately, and errors or malfunctions are detected more quickly. At the same time, control over sensitive data often remains directly on-site, which is also beneficial for data protection and cybersecurity.

In short, smart edge devices turn simple sensors and devices into clever helpers that make machines, processes, and digital life simpler, faster, and safer.
