Courage Through Life: A Story from the Neflental

The day begins gently and quietly in the Neflental. It's bloom watch – a special time of year. The valley floor is still shrouded in mist, and the delicate cherry and violet blossoms shine like stars on the gnarled, mossy trees. The air smells of dew, and the fine cobwebs glitter like little treasures. Shadowy mythical creatures dart about in the semi-darkness. It looks like a magical painting in pastel pink, lilac, emerald green, and pearl white.

A big test of courage at the Crystal Lake

At the edge of the Crystal Lake sits Rosa Immergrün, gazing at the water. It is so clear that you can see even the stars from the previous evening on its surface. The stilt houses of the Flossians rise artfully from the lake. That is where they live, half on the water, half on land. Their houses are woven from long branches and they glow because they have embedded so many mussels and pearls into the walls. Some mosaics even tell old stories of the Flossians.

All is still for now, but Rosa Immergrün senses a challenge awaits today. For when the flower watch begins, the Flossians will choose someone to explore the deepest point of the Crystal Lake. Many are afraid of it. Some tell tales of shadows lurking at the bottom. But the Flossians say: only the brave can discover the beauties of the deep.

Why courage counts

Rosa Immergrün pondered for a long time. „Do I dare?“ she asked herself. The water was colder than usual today, and the fog refused to lift. A group of Flossians were already swimming in circles, waiting. Their leader called out, „Come on! It's our best day of the year!“

Rosa Immervgreen notices her heart beating faster. She remembers stumbling over a thick branch in the fern forest once, and then continuing on her way anyway. „Courage grows when you try,“ she thinks. The Flossians laugh and wave her over kindly. One of them presses a shell amulet into her hand. „It will bring you luck and courage!“ he says, and he smiles.

The Adventure at the Bottom of the Crystal Lake

Rosa Immergrün cautiously dips into the water. She feels the crystal lake washing away her fear. Underwater, light glints off the shiny shell mosaics. Suddenly, she sees something shimmering beneath a stilt-house staircase. There lie silver stones, of which only the brave know.

It takes a moment, but Rosa the ever-present holds her breath and swims deeper. Down there, she discovers a small, sparkling treasure, unlike any seen before. The Flossians cheer as she resurfaces. Now everyone knows: she is braver than she thought!

In the evening, as the fog returns and the day's pastel colours fade, everyone celebrates together. The shell and pearl mosaics glow, and new stories emerge. Who would have thought that of all days, someone would be so brave today? They held hands and laughed at their fears.

What do we learn from this?

Sometimes we think: „I'll never manage this!“ Or we believe that only other people have courage. But often we discover how strong and brave we are when we simply try. That's how we grow beyond ourselves. In the Neflental, everyone has seen: with courage, you can achieve things that previously seemed impossible. And sometimes we are braver than we thought beforehand.
