Lebanon still hosts by far the most refugees relative to its population. According to the latest figures from the UNHCR In late 2017, 164 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants found refuge in the small country on the eastern Mediterranean. These figures only include refugees under the mandate of the UNHCR. If Palestinian refugees under the mandate of UNRWA (some of whom have been living in Lebanon for 70 years) are included, the number rises to 250 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants.
Although Turkey ranks only third in relation to its population, it is the country that has taken in the most refugees overall. At the end of 2017, it hosted 3.5 million refugees, most of whom fled there from the fighting in neighbouring Syria.
