The term enterprise-wide data architecture is primarily found in the fields of digital transformation, big data and smart data, and the Internet of Things (IoT). It describes how all data in a company is centrally organised, linked, and managed. The goal of an enterprise-wide data architecture is to meaningfully connect and structure various data sources, such as customer data, production data, or financial data, so that all departments can access reliable information at any time.

Imagine a large company with multiple locations. Without a company-wide data architecture, each department stores its data differently – perhaps in Excel lists, various cloud services, or legacy programmes. This leads to chaos, duplicate entries, and errors. With a well-thought-out data architecture, all data sources are consolidated. For example, sales can immediately see which products are in stock because sales data is directly linked to inventory and the purchasing system.

A robust company-wide data architecture not only simplifies daily processes, but also improves collaboration and creates the basis for modern technologies such as artificial intelligence or data-driven business models.
