The Digital Supply Chain is primarily at home in the areas of Digital Transformation, Industry and Factory 4.0, as well as eCommerce and Digital Commerce. It describes the modern, digital control and monitoring of goods and information flows within a company and along the entire supply chain – from production to the customer.
While previously many supply chain processes were manual or conducted via phone, fax, and paper, today's digital supply chain utilises digital tools and interconnected systems. This enables companies to deliver their products to end customers faster, more reliably, and often at a lower cost. Digital technologies such as sensors, cloud software, and artificial intelligence capture, in real time, the location of goods, inventory levels, and when replenishment is needed.
A vivid example: An online retailer has an overview at all times of how many T-shirts of precisely which colour and size are in stock. Using digital data, they can reorder immediately if demand increases and guarantee their customers punctual delivery times. In this way, the digital supply chain ensures satisfied customers and more efficiency within the company.
