Where exposure to fake news is highest

A high level of news literacy is important when it comes to distinguishing fact from fiction and a fake news story identifiable. This was an important aspect of the Reuters Institute Digital News Report, who has investigated trust and misinformation in global news consumption. Unsurprisingly, the report found that people with a high level of interest in news tend to worry more about fake news. In countries with high news literacy, people were more likely to spot satirical news, opinion pieces and examples of poor journalism. In Turkey, 49 per cent of respondents believe they have encountered entirely fabricated news in the past week. The figure is also high in the United States, at 31 per cent, which is hardly surprising given the emergence of fake news during the 2016 election and its spread since. More surprising is the low figure of 15 per cent in the United Kingdom, considering how controversial misinformation was during the Brexit vote.
