The term Waterfall-to-Agile Transformation originates from the fields of Digital Transformation, HR work and teams, and Industry and Industry 4.0. Here, it describes the transition within companies from traditional, rigid working methods (Waterfall) to flexible, rapid methods (Agile).

With the waterfall model, a team works strictly according to plan, with all tasks proceeding step-by-step in sequence. Changes are barely possible during the process. Agile working, on the other hand, focuses on regular team coordination, rapid responses to new requirements and continuous improvement.

A vivid example: A company develops software for machines. Previously, all requirement lists were created, then programmed, and finally, the result was presented. Changes during development were barely feasible. With the waterfall-to-agile transformation, the team now works in short work cycles, known as sprints. After each sprint, customer feedback and new insights can be directly incorporated into the next work package.

This way, the waterfall-to-agile transformation not only promotes more flexible projects but also increases employee motivation and customer satisfaction – a crucial step for companies that want to remain successful in the digital world.
