The term online participation is primarily at home in the areas of digital society, digital transformation, and digital leadership. It describes the possibility of actively participating in decision-making processes, discussions, or projects via digital channels – whether in private life, within a company, or in public life. This often involves participation in surveys, co-determination of political decisions, or collaboration on community ideas online.

A clear example of online participation is citizens taking part in an online vote on the redesign of a city park. Through a special portal, people can submit their suggestions or vote for their favourite ideas. This way, many perspectives are included without everyone needing to be present in person.

Online participation makes decision-making processes more transparent and accessible. It saves time, fosters innovation, and strengthens the sense of community – not just in cities, but also in companies that wish to involve their employees in important projects using digital tools. This, in turn, builds trust and identification with the decisions made.
