Intelligent sensors are primarily found in the fields of industry and Industry 4.0, automation, and the Internet of Things. The term describes sensors that not only measure simple data but can also evaluate and process it directly. This makes them „intelligent“: they can make decisions or initiate processes themselves.
A simple example: On a modern production line, intelligent sensors measure whether a product has been assembled correctly. If they detect an error, they automatically stop the machine and send a message to the responsible person. This way, errors are identified and rectified immediately, saving time and costs.
Intelligent sensor technology is the foundation for many innovations, such as smart refrigerators that notice when a food item is running low, or networked road systems in traffic that detect traffic jams early on. Wherever machines communicate with each other and processes are made more efficient, intelligent sensor technology is in use. This makes it an important building block of the digital future.
