Green IT is particularly important in the areas of sustainability and Environment 4.0, as well as digital transformation. The term describes all measures taken to make information technology (IT) more environmentally friendly. The goal is to reduce the energy consumption and environmental impact of computers, data centres, networks and software.
A simple example: Instead of many power-hungry computers in individual offices, a company decides to use a central, energy-efficient data centre. The computers are powered by green electricity and set to consume as little power as possible in standby mode. This saves resources and costs, while also protecting the environment.
However, Green IT is not just about energy. It also includes the environmentally sound disposal of old hardware, the use of recyclable materials and durable devices, and the avoidance of e-waste.
For businesses, Green IT is an opportunity to work more sustainably and improve their own image – often even with cost advantages. Anyone who values sustainability and efficiency should therefore familiarise themselves with Green IT.
