Digital fasting refers to the conscious reduction or temporary abstinence from digital media. It does not involve complete renunciation, but rather a targeted reduction in media use. The aim is to manage daily digital input in such a way that cognitive load decreases, and valuable free time is created. This can be achieved, for example, by switching off push notifications or by consciously using offline phases during working hours.

It is particularly recommended for managers to schedule fixed times for digital detox. This minimises distractions and allows complex tasks to be tackled with full attention. At the same time, this strengthens the ability to set priorities and develop long-term strategies.

Managers and teams communicate only in person or by phone, without laptops and smartphones. This has led to a visible increase in concentration and more in-depth discussions.

Managers turn off all non-essential notifications during their most important work phases and dedicate themselves exclusively to challenging tasks. This promoted efficiency and significantly reduced stress.

Best Practice at DEF Company (Name changed due to NDA) This company relies on short, frequent digital breaks. After every 45 minutes of screen work, there is a five-minute break without a screen. Managers report increased concentration and better work quality.

How Digital Fasting Boosts Productivity

Digital detox helps executives to control the constant barrage of stimuli from screens and notifications. Without these distractions, focus periods are extended, allowing for more precise and faster processing of complex tasks. Several studies show that the error rate is significantly reduced by fewer interruptions. At the same time, there is a positive effect on mental health and stress levels.

A conscious approach to technology also leads to a better work-life balance. Those who set boundaries for the use of mobile devices gain more time for family, friends and relaxation. In the long term, this promotes satisfaction and motivation – two factors that are essential for productive leadership.

Furthermore, the use of special apps can help monitor digital consumption and set restrictions. Many of these tools allow specific applications to be blocked temporarily, thereby strengthening self-discipline. Additionally, deliberately switching off visual stimuli, such as by using blue light filters on screens, supports concentration and improves sleep.

Open communication within the team about conscious digital breaks fosters understanding and promotes a company culture that recognises digital fasting as an important practice. Leaders can take on a role model function and provide impetus for mindful use of digital media.

The conscious practice of digital detox not only promotes productivity in the workplace but also mental stability and mindful collaboration within the team.
