The term CO₂-conscious scheduling originates from the fields of „Sustainability and Environment 4.0“ and „Digital Transformation“. It describes a modern approach where appointments, processes, and working hours are organised in such a way that CO₂ emissions are kept as low as possible.
When planning with CO₂ in mind, specific attention is paid to which activities are particularly climate-friendly at which times. For example, this can mean organising meetings as video conferences rather than in-person appointments requiring travel. The timing of activities is also important: when energy from renewable sources is available on the grid – for instance, during times of strong wind or sunshine – energy-intensive tasks can be scheduled to take place then. This is how CO₂ emissions are reduced.
A vivid example: a company schedules its weekly server update process not at night without solar power, but specifically for midday on a sunny day. This way, it utilises clean solar power and avoids additional emissions. CO₂-conscious scheduling thus helps to integrate sustainability practically into everyday life and is a building block for climate-friendly work in the digital world.
