The term „Security by Design“ belongs to the fields of cybercrime and cybersecurity, industry and Industry 4.0, and the Internet of Things. It describes a principle where protection against cyberattacks is built into the development of products, systems, or machines from the outset.

Instead of adding security as an afterthought, it is considered directly during the design phase. This allows vulnerabilities and security gaps to be identified and avoided early on. The goal is to make digital products and systems stable and resilient against attacks.

A clear-cut example: In a factory where robots and machines communicate with each other over the internet, strict security mechanisms are integrated right from the planning stage. This ensures that only authorised employees can remotely control machines or access sensitive data. This leaves hackers with very little chance of making unauthorised interventions.

Security by Design ensures fewer risks in the long term, lower costs through damage prevention and greater user trust. This principle is particularly important for companies that work with sensitive data or digital control.
