Robotics Sandbox (Glossary)

Robotic sandboxes are particularly relevant in the fields of automation, industry and Industry 4.0, and robots in the home. These are secure, enclosed testing environments where new robot software, programming or workflows can be tried out without endangering real machines, work processes or people.

Imagine a robotics sandbox like a sandpit on a playground, but for robots: developers can simulate different scenarios, movement sequences, or functions within it. Errors or crashes don't lead to any real damage because everything happens in a protected environment.

A clear example: a company wants to teach a robot to pack delicate glassware. In the robotics sandbox, it is first tested how the gripper arm grasps the glasses, how firmly or gently it needs to do so, and which movements work best. Only when everything runs optimally is the programme transferred to the real robot in the production hall.

Robotic sandboxes help to develop innovations faster, safer and more cost-effectively by preventing costly errors and interruptions to operations. They give companies the opportunity to test a wide range of automation solutions risk-free.
