A new study by the Thomson Reuters Foundation found that India is the most dangerous country in the world for women. The study is based on a survey of 550 female and male experts on women's issues. The criteria included healthcare, discrimination, cultural traditions, sexual/non-sexual violence, and human trafficking.
After a student was raped and murdered on a bus in Delhi five years ago, efforts to combat violence against women India to a national priority. Experts have now determined that the country is not progressing quickly enough to eliminate the dangers faced by women, as rape, sexual harassment/molestation and infanticide against women continue at an alarming rate.
The war-torn countries of Afghanistan and Syria came second and third in the study, whilst the entry at number 10 is certainly a surprise. According to experts, the United States has made it into the top 10 list of the most dangerous countries for women because the #MeToo and Time’s Up campaigns have been dominating the headlines and media coverage for months.
